With reference to your first point, the...Comrade T

With reference to your first point, the press can, I'd argue, be considered a platform. It's been used as one for the 'reds' or 'blues' for decades. Some papers use their rag to promote or counter a particular ideology or agendas.I suppose it would have been more accurate to use 'a paper' rather than the collective 'press'. I believe most papers fit the bill though. Let's not kid ourselves that ethics is a major concern for them. They love money, little else.

''Perhaps one could if deaf and blind to the manifest reality of one’s situation at the time.''

There are two points in time here. Point one marks a fairly early time when the event was relatively fresh and he fear and panic were presumably still prevalent in the mind of each parent. it doesn't take a great leap of empathy to understand that offers such as the Bell one wold be eagerly grabbed. It promised to be 12 months of front page after all .Unfortunately, the McCanns didn't know that the big chunks of funding paid the likes of Bell, and privated detecive agencies, was to be a waste. Did they, at point 1 in time, have any personal relationship with any of the agencies making promises,or any knowledge of their background ? Were they to treat them with suspicion or contempt when they appeared to be offering them a lifeline ? Is it difficult to understand the mindset of the parents when they grabbed the offers with both hands ? I'd say it's perfectly understandable. But then I don't have an agenda to look back at that point in time and pick at it to see if it can be worked into a new shape that frames the parents as fraudsters, liars or killers. Which brings us to point 2.

Point 2, in the context of this area, is marked by the Leveson recommendations that were being ignored . GM, for his part, pointed to press intrusion of innocent people,as outlined by Leveson.I don't see why that was, or is, wrong. Intrusion is wrong. The methods in discussion were also illegal. Why can't anyone hold that making a positive use of the press with a positive, legal outcome as an aim still hold that press intrusion is morally wrong as well as illegal ? The situation at point 1 was one of desperation and panic. By the arrival of point 2, a lot of time had gone by and nothing whatsoever had come of the investigation regardless of media coverage and money spent. The situation by then , I'd suggest, was more of anger and frustration. My reading of GM in his interviews suggests that he is angry at the media hijacking the case to make money for themselves. I read the statements of support from the parents when talking about Mitchell ( and vice versa) but i never take them seriously as, by the very nature of their release, they are PR exercises. I believe the gratitude towards CM was far more short lived than we'e shown. This is what has , for a while, given me the impression that GM , in his private moments, must question the chain of command from Mitchell upwards. I think it's left the McCanns in the same Limbo as the case.

Not dizzy, T, thanks.

Can 'demonstrable falsehoods' not be converted into 'demonstrable incriminating evidence' - even if only circumstantial ? If they're demonstrable, surely they can be. Demonstrable, after all. means that they can be proven. The absence of any proof of anything has been the only reason that this case has been open for 11 years with not so much as a step of progress. How demonstrable are they ?There's been a lot of eyes investigating this case from here and Portugal. Lies are easy to expose. And truth is easily supported. Evidence is the judge, m'lord.

Namaste

PS Conjectures /opinions do indeed differ. And some may well be better than others. But 'better' is a very subjective notion, and opinions are never more than opinions. Nobody can defend the parents' decision to leave the children alone and even their own rationalizing of it isn't stable. But,whatever happened after that is a mystery, like it or not. Some believe she was abducted and taken God knows where for whatever reason. The more fashionable idea is the crime novel inspired theory of the well-to-do turning bad then being protected by the higher circles. Neither have any proof. The abduction supporters have only the empty space where Madeleine once was.The other, more creative, scenarios have guesses and constructed narratives based on imagination. The latter lends itself to far more conspiracy theories than the former if you look closely.

Articles about the McCanns are of secondary importance to the event of 2007.It doesn't matter if the stories filling pages cast them in a good or bad light. Those determined to crucify them for a crime they suspect they have committed feed on them to see if there's anything the can pick out, exaggerate and interpret their own way and then add to the long list of other damning attributes they've gathered over the years. They provide the readership and keep the media fire lit. Then they jump online to condemn the media. It seems that every area they isolate for scrutiny sends them spinning in a small circle like a dog chasing it's tale. That's why they bark louder and more often than others.Frustration.

Nobody has anything to support anything. They can't have it both ways, although apparently they thought they could - paying an enormous amount of money to have their reputations wiped clean and make them look whiter than white although they were both solely responsible for what happened to Madeleine whichever scenario you prefer to believe, they obviously underestimated the press and they didn't spell out in black and white that only favourable articles should be written about them.
