As my regular readers will know I have been avoiding the news as much as I can, but I am an avid follower of twitter and even reading with one eye scrunched up (that's how I read now) I have not been able to avoid that tonight, or is it tomorrow, Brexit will happen.
I am sad indeed. I don't want to be 'a little Englander' or a whinging POME, a prisoner of mother England, unable to play nicely with our closest neighbours because they are foreign. The kind of people that insist their streets and neighbourhoods remain in a timewarp with the same white neighbours from generation to generation. Sad old farts that simply cannot handle change. I would pity them if their malevolent views were not so pervasive, but sadly they appeal to the lowest echelons of society, the uneducated.
We are entering a new dark age, something that should be recorded somewhere in history. Greed and nationalism has won over equality and compassion. Aldous Huxley has won over George Orwell, we are not in the grey regimented communist world of Orwell, we are in the groteseque, throwaway world of capitalism. I have no doubt, we are probably being graded into alphas, betas and epsilons as I write, our value determined on the number of likes and followers we have in the current world.
Greed is good, greed works, until it causes chaos and turmoil for millions of ordinary people doing ordinary jobs. They are the first to suffer when the drug fuelled spin of the throw the dice tactics are used by the purveyors of high and fast finance. They crash the world's economy, the poor people pay the price. And it's worth mentioning here, that the poor people are the biggest majority. Nuts huh? William Blake prodded the poor.... 'tiger tiger burning bright' , oh if you only knew what power you had. 300+ years later, it is still the same old story, hey poor people, why do you keep voting for the richest to keep getting richer?
I despair, but in a good mood tonight - off to listen to 'Back to Black'.

So basically you can say one thing one day and then another thing a few hours after? Yes - deranged is apt - as you have been for the whole time you have posted on the internet - but you have ignored the people who have pointed it out to you. I quote:
"deranged
adjective
completely unable to think clearly or behave in a controlled way, especially because of mental illness:"
https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/deranged
23:01
DeleteA partial interpretation; ‘deranged’ also means ‘eccentric’ and 'eccentric' also means 'unconventional'.
Many thanks for pointing out all my faults and foibles 23:01 - I could use you as a wing man, with all your whinging and complaining you could turn me into the perfect automaton.
DeleteFor your information 23:01, not wishing to make you give up hope or anything, the chances of my changing my character, personality or annoying habit of being contrary are slim to zilch. And let's be honest. If I became the writer you wanted me to be, you wouldn't like me anymore.
Given your penchant for repeating the most popular general opinions are from Twitter then typing them here, that could be a good idea.

ReplyDeleteI read in a History book that Britannia once ruled the waves and that Britain was the saviour of world peace in two world wars. All without being part of Europe but able to command assistance from enough factions of it as so we could liberate lot of it .But now it's 'uneducated' of us plebs to be proud of that.To be proud of being British isn't enough any more. We're guilty of some 'ism' or other according to the stuck up narrow minded nose-in-the-air middle class Twitter sheep.Nice.
''Greed and nationalism has won over equality and compassion. ''
ReplyDeleteCan you explain or define 'greed and nationalism' in the context of leaving Europe. Then can you define' equality and compassion' for the same reasons and give some examples. The mind boggles.
( apparently not )

DeleteUnity is strength and other tall stories...
ReplyDeleteIn the good old days, Britain was a place in which jobs were everywhere. If you lost one on Tuesday, you could find one on Wednesday.Unskilled, working class people were able to buy their own homes and provide security and future legacies for their children. Some were lucky enough to fly to the sunshine and summers of glamorous places like Spain, Portugal and Greece and swim in crystal clear waters and walk on powdered sands. This wasn't 100 years ago. This was as recent as the 1960s. Then Edward Heath, the toff, elitist Tory was put into Downing Street and the Tories did what Germany had told him to do.It took a couple of years of crossing t's and dotting i's, not unlike Brexit, but we were in by 1973.The rot began then. It's crept slowly but surely and here we are.Still under the Tory Jackboot.
From that year we saw the unthinkable; unemployment reaching an unthinkable 750,000 by 1978. Labour Party blamed.Enter Tory demon Thatcher, friend of Israel and Germany. She would get rid of that number in no uncertain terms. And she was good to her word.It was just under 4 million 3 years later.Let's have a war.Argentina will do. Keep the mugs jingoistic...
Fast forward to the 21st century and Cameron, the love child of Thatcher and Satan. He was going to slash the unemployment figures following Thatcher's model.Again, good to his word. But his method was to merely withold as much of it as possible. It's just numbers..
Meanwhile in Europe, those once upon a time dream holiday destinations had taken an even harder kicking in terms of austerity.Greece went bust and needed an offer they couldn't resist as Brussels, Europe;s coward, sat at the round table like Don Corleone surrounded by his EU mafia.Spain and Portugal had some of the same and Irlenad too.Where was this unity.Where was the safety in numbers and strength ?The EU was operating like a pinstriped Chicago oufit. They still are.And Germany are impervious to any of it.
Britain is a mess and that's a combination of the Tory's obsessive war mongering with America and their paranoid obsession with surrounding Israel with defence, pumping money into Brussels, and the cut-throat austerity measures. We were supposed to be on our knees to Europe to rescue us like Spain, Portugal and Greece. No sale, Brussels. Up yours Germany. Good luck with France and Italy. But I suspect the exit of the Brits is a harbinger of more to come. The crumbling has begun for the EU.At last.
Footnote. You can't logically voice disgust and anger at the failure of Jeremy Corbyn to win the election as he was going to attack austerity and boost the NHS in one breath, but, in your next breath, label anyone who who celebrates our exit from the Union which has broken other countries who were as 'uneducated'.

ReplyDeleteWhy conclude that wanting to be out of the EU's grip we are racist ? What has skin colour got to do with anything. What percentage of the European countries are black ? Germany ? France? Spain ? Portugal ? Switzerland? Brussels ? Sweden ? Italy ? You're attempting to marry up the views of national confidence with racism. You're labelling without the evidence again. Wanting to live within our own borders isn't racist. Are Africans racist of they voice pride in their heritage and mother country if they want to stay there ?Is that 'anti' white ?
'' Sad old farts that simply cannot handle change. I would pity them if their malevolent views were not so pervasive, but sadly they appeal to the lowest echelons of society, the uneducated. ''
Labelling again.Wanting change equates to being an 'old fart' now. Remember the 'old farts' of the 1970s and 1980s who spoke about having index linked pensions 'like they do in Europe' ? Well, they ended up in Europe-what happened ? Or were you just being lazy in your choice of tone and language.Just wanting to be derogatory towards those who suggests that 50 years have brought us to a place in our history where our (pre-EU) NHS is on the floor and our unemployment figures soar proudly higher than at any other time in our history ?A time in our history that sees the city centres throughout the UK growing miniature cities of sleeping bags and borrowed shopping trolleys for the 'european' Brits. Shanty towns. And other countries in the EU are seeing the same. But let's ignore that and display how 'right on' we are by sounding off about the racism (that nobody mentioned). We can pat ourselves on the back for being 'progressive' that way.
'' oh if you only knew what power you had. 300+ years later, it is still the same old story, hey poor people, why do you keep voting for the richest to keep getting richer?''
Maybe because 'the sad old farts' are also 'the uneducated' as you pointed out so tactfully. I have no idea how high up the top floor is in your ivory tower.Or if you can read this from on top of your pedestal. You may not be a 'little Englander' but you are most certainly showing how much of a closet Middle Englander you are by sounding off in such ill informed yet superior tones.By all means, continue to sneer and look with disgust down your nose at the 'old farts and uneducated' and judge them all. But don't try to sell the idea of being the 'subversive muser' you promote on the front door of this blog. The working class heroine who champions the Labour party and it's leaders.Tony Blair was you kind of man.He was also a died in the wool true blue wearing a red rosette.
Ouch, ouch and ouch, I accept that I am scolded,
DeleteI (skim) read the above 20:03, but make no apologies for my attitude. Injustice, unfortunately, is born of ignorance, ergo ignorance angers me. Am I wrong to point it out? Should we just accept that a large percentage of our population are err, ignorant. That is, they are persuaded to arguments they know very little about, by catchy soundbites and Sun newspaper headlines. Shall we just pretend all that doesn't exist because we don't want to offend them? How quickly will our nation be dumbed down without the influence of our European neighbours.

Aaah God is good - is something I would say right now if I were a Muslim or even a Roman Catholic who took it all seriously. But I'm not going to knock the RCs just now - there's an outside bet, I might ask for all my sins to be absolved before I pop my clogs, I would also be happy to wear a hajib on a bad hair day. God is good because I just found a bag of ice cubes in the bottom of my freezer which I have bashed with a hammer (they were stuck together) and used to line the bottom of a glass, onto which I have poured a big ole glug of Zinfandel. Not sure I will like, I bought it on the basis that it was pink, but results will probably be known by the end of this post. I could be calling you a scumbag and faggot or suggesting a Spring wedding. In the event of the second.... treat as if I had a taken a large dose of angel dust.
DeleteBut I have gone off track. Yes, I'm afraid I do have a bit of a superiority complex when it comes to the English language. Mostly because I have spent my entire life reading and practicing ways in which to take my words and my knowledge and turn them into easily accessible texts that people want to read. If I were a builder, I would be a Master builder, if I were a Sculptor, my hands would be covered in blisters where I strived for perfection.
There was once a (mad) poster in the Cesspit who wrote (boring) diatribes about my lack of writing talent. 'She just writes' she opined, 'she spews out whatever goes on in her head - she is no better than a typist in a typing pool'.
I am sure it wasn't her intention, but it actually made me quite proud of my work. I have always gone for simplicity, it is never my intention to baffle or confuse my readers. I have a real distaste for pretentious and cryptic writing. OK for an elitist, academic audience who can guffaw over hidden subtexts at a dinner part, but inaccessible to the majority. The greatest teacher I ever had (my beloved Dad) always explained everything to me as if I were a 4 year old, even when in my 40's. It is actually far more skilled to take a subject and break it down in simplistic terms. I remember as a young secretary, wanting to learn about Greek mythology - mostly because I two sons who loved Hercules, the cartoon. I spoke about it with a young article clerk (solicitor to be) and she let me into a little secret. Always learn the 'child's version' first, and she pointed me in the direction of the Puffin books. 'Oldies' will remember that Puffin books, were the children's equivalent of Penguin books. At the time I worked in Holborn, but I caught a bus to Tottenham Court Road (famous for its bookshops) and a bought a gem of Puffin book entitled Myths and Heroes (or thereabouts don't have it to hand). It became the most popular and well read book in our house, it is now falling to pieces, and was an excellent source of knowledge for myself when I went out on posh lunches, ha ha.
I apologise for being an arrogant biatch 20.03, lol, but not really. I always used to love the arrogance of err, older, female British icons, like Margaret Rutherford and Agatha Christie. As a child I had humility and subservientcy battered into me, whilst my peers at the private schools were being praised and prepared for government.
Humility is, I agree, one of the more endearing human traits, especially in young people, but unless you are sure your genius is about to go global, the only one to sing your own praises is you. Now I haven't rocked the world as much as I hoped I would, but I have become expert at what I do. I just type.
But returning to your grievances 20:03, and maybe another post....
You didn't mention the word 'ignorance' in your post once. Nor did you imply why you hold such a large demographic in contempt. You mentioned them being pro- white and uneducated.
DeleteIf you are going to identify such a sizable slice of a population to categorize, you really need to support your observations and opinions with a bit more than name calling. If you refuse to, or can't, you're left giving the impression that you're no better than the old BNP and their slogans. You might shout different ones but it's still shouting. It's just noise.
You may not be aware, but the search engines and social networks that you use- they use too. Google is a huge confirmation bias engine. And social networks are dedicated to eliminating the sense of 'I' in favour of the 'we'. Then you can control crowds instead of leaving individuals to to think . Don't kid yourself European neighbours are 'dumbing down' the British. America run that world like they try to run this one. And if you don't think they know how to dumb down a nation look in the Whitehouse. All social networks and search engines lead to Washington and Silicon Valley just as all roads once led to Rome.
No, I do not feel in the least bit inclined to join in with the Brexit, Nationalist, celebrations. One of my idols, and albeit dead, mentors, was Charlie Chaplin. Through him I learned how malevolent and destructive nationalism and patriotism can be - not least, it leads to war.
DeleteI am all for preserving our culture and history, who doesn't love the quintessential English village as portrayed by George Orwell, but that preserving of culture, applies to everyone. People from other societies want to preserve their heritage and culture too. And that is to be celebrated, who wants to see every City in the world exactly the same as each other? The sci fi writers foresee that and worse, whether we take the Capitalist or Communist route, the end result will be the same.
You may not like my pointing it out 20:03, but nationalism, patriotism and xenophobia played a big role in the Brexit decision. You are blind if you did not see the very clear, in your face, messages of Nigel Farage, Tommy Robinson, Trump arselicker Piers Morgan and the Tory party. These fat odious, loud mouthed Stupid White Men*. The kind of men most of us leaving standing alone in social situations, but who are applauded, but who are applauded by equally well stuffed gammons over a G&T down at the Dog and Duck.
Not a single one of us, would put our gropey, drunken, deranged old gammon uncles in charge of anything beyond the coat room and kicking off the Sinatra and Dean Martin section of the karaoke, in charge of running the world. That boring old fart who held court every Sunday at the Conservative party and the Golf club, is having a whole new renaissance.
Gawd 'elp us.
Enjoy your time my friend, though I think it will be shortlived. Eventually the next generation and the more enlightened will take over.
*Michael Moore book
'Why I hold such a large demographic in contempt' (this may turn into a blog)
DeleteBack in the middle to late 1800s, Charles Dickens held a mirror up to society. That is, he showed, and demonstrated, through his stories, the misery and yes, the ignorance, of the lower classes that kept them in poverty. Would an educated person send their children up chimneys? indeed, would an educated person teach his children to aspire to work up chimney, or in factories?
Dickens understood the effects of social engineering, the deliberate governments policies, to keep all classes in their place. Educated just enough to be grateful for a job down the mines or on a conveyer belt. Was Dickens demeaning those people in the lowest echelons of society? He didn't hide their ignorance, he used their ignorance to make them endearing. Those were the days of the deserving and the undeserving poor, a cycle that come around again, but now we have the PC element, we totally ignore that these ignorant souls know nothing, zilch, we just work around it in order not to offend them. To you 17:57, I would say grow up. Accept that there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Some who can help you, and some you can help. That's life, that's a given.
The intellectual vanity is misplaced on this blog. It's a blog. Nobody's marking your grammar, spelling, or syntax. It's the content that takes priority and the tone is next in line. You can claim you are a master craftsmen all day. Just as a builder can.But both will be judged by others when the job's complete.Self -praise is never a good( or reliable) recommendation.
DeleteYou are quick to chastise others. You are even quicker to defend any constructive criticism given to you.You tell others that criticism will help them develop; to improve.Yet those laws don't apply to you. You consider that you're above them. That's slightly arrogant. It isn't endearing.
Margaret Rutherford was a talented actress who played mainly eccentric, lovable middle aged and elderly English ladies from middle England. Agatha Christie was a middle class girl who matured into a very sharp and talented crime writer.Neither were, or are, known for any streak of arrogance.Even if their proven success in their chosen fields entitle them to have it.Humility and arrogance are traits that develop. They aren't taught by others. They are self-taught. You don't need to be smart to be arrogant or humble. You just need integrity and character. It isn't bound by age limits either. What you choose is evident to others and tells them more than your words.
Nationalism and patriotism may well have played a part in Brexit. Is it wrong to feel nationalistic or patriotic ? Is it wrong to feel those just because others who want to exit Europe are xenophobes ? Do you think people need to be educated by morons like Farage, , Morgan or anyone else to feel patriotic ? Saying 'I'm proud to b British' does not equate to ''I hate foreigners'.That's the new disease that's creeping about. The 'let's be 'woke' and find something to be outraged by and tweet it'.It's horrible.
Dickens showed us a mirror yes.And he pricked the conscience of Victoria's cronies. But in less than 100 years we had cleared a million slums; created the NHS and social housing and survived two world wars and rebuilt again.Without being in Europe.Post- Europe we had the Tory attacking the grants for higher education. They didn't nor do want the plebs thinking. That's social engineering from Thatcher (1979 onward) . Is that the social engineering you mean ? That was post Europe.Which tells me that the party who dragged us into Europe were the real elitist social engineers. And they have tried in 200 onward to take us back to pre- NHS and head back to Dickens.
Well I best just go stick my head straight in the oven 23:11 lol, there's clearly no hope. I just can't win with you can I? I am constantly criticised for not 'being qualified' to discuss certain matters, yet when I explain how I know so much about said matter, it is dismissed as arrogance.
DeleteMy point with Margaret Rutherford and Agatha Christie was the fact that both were formidable women. No-one is going to tell them 'go put the kettle on' or get them a drink. Not because of their reputations, but because of the way they presented themselves.
I was once admonished by the head of the Secretarial school for being mean to a class of trainee legal secretaries. They were notorious throughout the college, even the plumbers and builders were terrified of them. I got the short straw of teaching them GCSE English, as the newest staff member, lol. I wasn't bothered about the telling off, mostly because the woman doing the telling off, laughed at my protestations (they were mean to me) and called me a formidable woman. It made my day!
Ah, again with the Nationalism and patriotism. Like my hero Chaplin, I am a citizen (unless offered a knighthood) of the world. There is much about Britishness that I love, but I detest the rise of people like Tommy Robinson and Britain First. Now tell me they are not nationalists and patriots. You only have to look over the pond at Trump's America First, isolationism, closing of borders and locking kids in cages, to see where nationalism and patriotism leads.
Utterly amazed at how you were able to turn Charles Dickens into a tory there, kudos. All the major advancements in British society has come through Labour governments. Next you will be telling us (tory) Winston Churchill, brought us the NHS, or that William Blake was celebrating the beauty of those 'satanic mills'.
Again, Rutherford and Christie exuded self-confidence. Not arrogance.
DeleteAgain, just because some people are proud to be British and they're racist, it doesn't follow that to be proud of being British is racist. It only stands for that section , not all.
How did I turn Dickens into a Tory ?
I'm aware that all major advancements that have benefited the people have been through Labour governments.Social housing and the NHS the most important. But I haven't criticized that party.I criticized the one that took us into Europe and chose America to glue themselves to any time war was needed to boost the coffers of the PM and President of their time.Churchill was a Tory yes.During the war.But he'd cut his teeth for 20 years as a member of the Liberal party at the turn of the century and learned a lot from Lloyd George.
Blake ? He was being ironic anyway.Sadly, people sing his poem as an unofficial anthem without knowing that the answer to his questions in the poem you reference is 'no' each time.He was noticing the state's desire to crush individual spirit.
Have you got your Irish passport yet Ros?
ReplyDeleteApparently there is a huge backlog in applications.

ReplyDeleteAnd then she continues raging against Britain leaving the EU. Nice irony there, Ros.
Ahh, you are implying I am a sad old fart, good one. Not entirely sure it is applicable though. Sad may well apply, it is all down to the way others see us. I accept that I would probably be seen as sad because of the trouble I go to each day to 'get ready'. For me, the 'getting ready' is the fun part and the results, rightly or wrongly, lift my spirits to a new level. When I am sad, I am the mad women in the attic who creeps out at night, in disguise, to buy essentials.
DeleteOne of the reasons I am seldom if ever, upset by the negative, and snidey, comments I receive, is the sound knowledge that they/you do not know me. I identify with the old song, 'Tears of Clown', in that to the outside world, and even on here, I like to think that I have a bubbly, fun, personality. I much prefer to make a person smile rather than frown.
Yes, I can and do, get up on my soapbox on occasion. But unlike grumpy old men, I can always see the humour in any given situation, even the sad ones. I don't begrudge the young or claim it was better in my day. The young, the next generation, are performing admirably, and they have at their constantly twitching fingers, the answer to every question they could ever ask. They are far better educated and equipped to deal with the 21st century than my generation.
But I digress, I think, deep down, you and indeed the moaners above, must like me really, because you keep coming back! ;)
''One of the reasons I am seldom if ever, upset by the negative, and snidey, comments I receive, is the sound knowledge that they/you do not know me''
DeleteThe reason you provoke negative or snide remarks is due to your failure to resits dishing them out for longer than five minutes. You interpret any point that differs from your own ill informed one as a personal affront. So you react in a way you consider appropriate. That is, to insult. Or to stamp your feet and scream like a petulant child. If you use swearing and personal insults to your visitors to your blog, that's all the need to know about you. What they read is your thoughts and attitude. How many of the guests that you insult here do you know personally ? If the answer is none at all, then is it really right to throw your negativity and snide comments at them ? Or this yet another of the now trademark Ros one way streets.
'' I like to think that I have a bubbly, fun, personality. I much prefer to make a person smile rather than frown.''
Maybe you have amnesia or selective amnesia.Have you re-read anything you have typed here since the opening 2020 January postings ?
''Yes, I can and do, get up on my soapbox on occasion. But unlike grumpy old men, I can always see the humour in any given situation,''
Can you explain the humour in your opening post on this particular thread that implies those who welcome leaving Europe are racist or uneducated please ?
''But I digress, I think, deep down, you and indeed the moaners above, must like me really, because you keep coming back! ;)''
It's the car crash TV syndrome. It's not pleasant but we can't avert our eyes. And no matter how many times we look it doesn't look any better than the first view.
We can argue til the cows come home about my ability to upset and insult people, but as you say, who doesn't like a bird's eye view of a car crash eh?
DeleteBut please don't get too overwhelmed with glee and self congratulations, I have, as far back as being a tiny tot, always gone above and beyond, to be centre stage. No such thing as bad publicity, or indeed, bad reasons for people to read me, such as hoping I will have a massive, documented mental breakdown ending in high drama of some sort.
Believe me, my quest for attention over the years has ended in multiple episodes of meltdowns, tears and humiliation, but it doesn't stop me, never has, never will. I own my mistakes, I laugh at them, I learn from them. My lack of embarrassment and enthusiasm to learn has saved me every time Proving someone wrong, or someone going above and beyond to prove me wrong, is a strange concept for me. I like to opposites coming together and finding common ground. As much fun as 'told you so' is in a playground, it is kind of pathetic in an adult environment. Having to prove yourself to that extent screams insecurity.
As a child of a Scottish father and Irish mother, born in Brixton, I have never quite been sure of what my nationality is. My blood is pure Celt, to be sure, but my education (indoctrination) has been English. On the plus side, I can use my Irish and Scottish heritage as an excuse to get drunk, cuss all protestants, and sing impossibly high rebel songs that will send all cats and beasties scurrying.
If your reasons for being rude and insulting to people who are strangers, or as good as to you, are rooted, as you say, in a need to be centre stage that's your business I suppose. It's your choice and it;s your blog.A bit like 'it's my ball and we play what i say'. That's fair enough and kudos for admitting it all.But can you see how admitting that effects how your readers and contributors perceive you ? You pontificate ad nauseam about how you always look for the positive in things and people when you're not pontificating about how intellectually gifted you think you are. Then, as soon as weaknesses are pointed out in your arguments or suggestions you resort to manic babbling and insults which tend to cancel out your claims seriously. You say you look for the good in people and in things as it sounds good. And that will persuade some to attribute the positive traits to you that you ant to give the impression of having. But your rants have often shown the real truth od what you do and what you look for.And not only is that rude and slightly juvenile, it's far from intellectual.
DeleteAccepting yourself warts and all is good.Conceding that it leads you to be obnoxious at times is understandable. But being proud of them is wrong. If you identify flaws you're supposed to work on eliminating them not wearing them as badges of pride because it's part of your personal epiphany.Your roots, your nationality, your parentage and heritage have little to do with any of that. Why point the finger in a hundred directions but never at yourself. You say you 'own' this or that.Own this.
So basically you want me to change my entire personality so it is more agreeable to you? LOL. You are the end of a line of many who have tried 23:30 and all have failed.
DeleteI suffered a great deal as a young woman trying my utmost to be 'normal', it didn't work and it made me very unhappy. Now I accept and indeed embrace myself for exactly who I am with no apologies. I am fully aware that many see me as a tad eccentric, even loopy, but I don't care. Some find it endearing, many find it entertaining. I teach as if I performing 'stand up' comedy, and my students love it. And before you start grouching at me, yes it very effective. As I have said, many times, one of my earliest influences was Uncle Dynamite from the PG Wodehouse books, who's philosophy in life is to spread sweetness and light.
I grew up in an era when class distinction was the dominant ideology. I was a secretary in the legal world, where a real 'upstairs/downstairs' mentally prevailed. There were 'staff' and 'fee earners' and the staff were strictly below stairs.
Did this make me resentful and bitter? Yep, you bet. I knew I just as clever as those I worked for and I knew that one day I would have qualifications to match theirs, or even higher. When I returned they would have to treat me as an equal. And I did return, a few times, my legal secretary skills were something I could always fall back on, a quick way to earn money. But it was never the same, actually it was just weird.
You think me arrogant, and yes I am. First spotted and documented by the nuns when I was 14. For that I blame my dear old mum, walk tall, walk straight and look the world right in the eye, she taught me, as well as never give in to the nuns. True this led to a very unhappy time in the convent, but I was proud of the fact that they never broke me, I never became one of the sheep. That strength has carried me through my entire life and it often presents as arrogance. You 23:30 are trying to do to me, what the nuns failed to do with their fists.
I have no problem 23:30 that you do not like me, I have been a pretty divisive love or hate kind of character my whole life, I have never wanted or even attempted to be all things to all people - god forbid. And yes I have encountered gangs of mean girls along the way, mostly in solicitors' offices, I eat them for breakfast ;)
As for arrogance, you have obviously not spend much time in the company of academics - humility is not their strongest trait, lol. And quite right too. They, we, are proud of what we have learned and yes, tis true, we love to show it off. Mostly by passing our acquired knowledge onto others. It is quite a thrill to know, that we can change lives, inspire people to learn more. And before you say I am making that up, like many teachers, I have a drawer full of thank you cards.
Now I am going to confound you even more 23:30, by saying Arrogance is good. We have 2000+ years of being 'umble as the bible told us so. Being humble keeps people in their allotted 'place' and to accept every injustice life heaps upon them. Their rewards will come in the next life. The Arrogant meanwhile, are enjoying all their rewards in this life. Look at the confidence of kids who attend public, fee paying schools, and the confidence of the kids who go to the overcrowded Comprehensive? Two different teaching methods, two different ideologies, social engineering anyone? Happily the masses are no longer indoctrinated to believe they are the scum of the earth, but this idea of humility is still a malevolent influence. My good fortune was having a mother without a humble bone in her body, high or low, she was happy to take the pee out anyone, as am I.
I want to go back to your silly 'it's my ball' reference, 23:30. This is an uncensored blog without any rules or conditions and anyone is free to say pretty much anything they want.
DeleteObviously, I'm not going to publish posts that are pure hate, no-one wants to read them and I'm not going to lower the tone of my blog. As long as you can be polite, I will publish.
The 'it's my ball' references is referring to your attitude, not your language. How did you miss that.
DeleteNobody is suggesting that you change your personality. The suggestion is more along the lines of your being less snappy when your mistakes are pointed out and less obnoxious to anyone who dares to disagree with you.Admit you're wrong and own up to your oversights as quickly as you point out the same in others.Be a little more sincere or genuine.Nobody buys these traits you display as wacky or eccentric. You wouldn't describe them as wacky or eccentric in others. You'd call a spade a spade.
Delete''You think me arrogant, and yes I am. First spotted and documented by the nuns when I was 14. For that I blame my dear old mum, walk tall, walk straight and look the world right in the eye,''
Your Mum was trying to make you believe in yourself and have confidence; not arrogance.
''You 23:30 are trying to do to me, what the nuns failed to do with their fists.''
You mean point out that you are arrogant ? Or that you are too small -minded to admit your mistakes and own up to having your arguments taken apart by contributors. You liken that to a physical beating. That tells readers that being exposed as less than all knowing hurts you as much as being beaten up.
''As for arrogance, you have obviously not spend much time in the company of academics - humility is not their strongest trait,''
Having a degree doesn't entitle you to be arrogant. It doesn't explain arrogance either - or excuse it.
''Now I am going to confound you even more 23:30, by saying Arrogance is good. We have 2000+ years of being 'umble as the bible told us so''
You're talking about an arrogance that comes as part of a larger package. One that's passed down. That of privilege and entitlement. The public school set can afford to be arrogant as they have a lot more doors open to them than those at the working class end of the scale. The working class aren't grovelling and humble like your Bible cliche. They have a pride and self belief. They just have less opportunities to achieve.Social engineering can't eliminate pride or belief. And if all it provides for the better off is cash, a sense of superiority, and arrogance, then the engineers are as messed up as they ever were. You are indirectly assessing the value of a person according to his position in life.Being judgemental as well as snobbish.
Ros - knowing your interest in US movies and your liking for To Kill A Mocking Bird - you should maybe watch a more modern and much more subtle film - Hidden Figures - it was on Channel 4 last night and will be available on catch-up. As a teenager in the 60's I found watching it was very strange as we had nothing similar over here. It was very moving and relevant.
ReplyDeleteHidden Figures - Awesome movie! Many thanks for the recommendation :)
DeleteSo, Ros, let me get this straight.
DeleteYou use Hollywood and movies as your primary source when you want to commentate on a diverse culture that encompasses 50 states.
You refer to those who want independence from the EU as racist, nationalistic , uneducated plebs or sad old farts. You imply that they're ' little Englanders'.You cast judgement.
You use the success of public schools and their 'class' to justify arrogance as being a good thing. A positive trait.Ignoring that you often rage against the arrogant elitists who have ruined Britain and caused chaos.
So tell us please, how does your ''i muse subversively' fit with any of the above. You voice and champion the ideologies of all middle class Tories who like to sneer at the 'plebs who are too thick to know the time of day so screw 'em' .
I hope you're not trying to persuade us that arrogance is fine and acceptable because it's intrinsically tied to higher intellect and superiority. If you are, no sale I'm afraid.
@ Rosalinda Hutton3 February 2020 at 23:43
DeleteGlad you enjoyed it - you called me a sarcastic twat recently.
But you missed my point in recommending the movie to you. For all your love and admiration of all things USA - they still had segregation in the 60's.
When have you ever seen race segregated toilets in the UK?
I kind of missed your point deliberately there 22:18 - I felt we were having a moment. Apologies for the 'sarcastic twat' comment, though you probably deserved it, ha ha, but lets just hug it out :)
DeleteYou are right, we have not had segregated toilets in the UK, though there was a fair bit of segregating going on in Northern Ireland. Queen Victoria, for all her faults, probably contributed considerably to the British attitude of acceptance - she was very fond of the colonies.
was that about one saying that a book being turned into a film allegedly contributed to the enlightening of a nation regarding their their white supremacy and the other point being that it couldn't have if segregation and racism was alive and well into the 1960s.If so, Hollywood's 'dream factory' took another blow there.
DeleteThank you kindly for your recommendation 18:04, I shall try to find it and watch it, I am always on the look out for 'great' movies, and certainly not all Hollywood, I am just as captivated even when having to read subtitles. I am thoroughly enjoying all the foreign films and dramas on Netflix, I also watch quite a few 'independents' (or is it 'ants?) on YouTube.
ReplyDeleteIf 'Hidden Figures' is anywhere near as iconic as To Kill a Mockingbird, it will become a treasure :)
I see Hollywood's finest have influenced the gullible again. Don't tell me, afro-carribean's are being under- represented in the movies as are women, transgenders and disabled lesbians. So we're on racism this month are we. What shall we be enraged about next week. I'm running out of things to be virtuous about.

DeleteLooks like a good start to 2020 for the Snowflakes and the woke.Their obsessive whining and concerted attempts at making bullshit go from viral to pandemic is paying off. In their naive, dim, unquestioning obedience to the masters, they've promoted their garbage far and wide and ushered in the one thing everyone should be protesting all along : Orwellian oppression. But Orwell wasn't a member of the marginalised. Unless you count the intellectual and sagacious as a minority ( which I do).
DeleteIn Orwell's far-sighted Dystopian vision of the future, which was published in 1948 as 1984, one of the many iconic images was that of the 'telescreen'.Every citizen had one.It wasn't optional- you had to have one.You couldn't escape surveillance and intrusion or propaganda.Even trying would result in a call from the 'thought police' and a penalty.
Far fetched nonsense they said back then. They still do in places. But no book was banned in more languages. That says something. So, when you look at your hand-held or desktop 'telescreen' be careful how you enjoy the 'amazing new world of technological wonder' we have as a luxury. Harry Miller wasn't as vigilant as perhaps he should have been. Like many, he actually thought freedom of speech was, and is, 'a thing'. After all, we live in a democracy don't we. The cleverness of the trick is to stir up some fringe groups first, get them outraged and spread them about.Soon they'll create an unofficial law or two that will censor certain ways of thinking or speaking. They'll make you censor yourself just for the sake of a quiet life. It's all pervasive now. It's everywhere online. practically everything is anti something.Even football is catching it. Once the terraces were crammed with crazy crowds singing and shouting and calling the referee as many things as possible in one song. Now they ignore the pitch and hold phones up and cry and emote that some player was just called gay. black or-wait for it- Jewish. So they hold protests and start 'groups' and announce helpline numbers.Stroll on.
Spare a thought for Harry. He won't be sparing many of his own so readily in future.

''One of my idols, and albeit dead, mentors, was Charlie Chaplin. Through him I learned how malevolent and destructive nationalism and patriotism can be - not least, it leads to war.''
Yet you argued ( apparently blindly )with Ziggy when he told you that Hollywood was a propaganda tool. How did Charlie Chaplin teach what you claim he taught you.Was it through his film that pointed to the mass productions of weapons of mass destruction was evil while he was still in Hollywood ? The most anti- American thing anyone could ever say ?He was then condemned for trying to 'corrupt' the youth of America with his fancy ideas of peace. But Hollywood's not a propaganda medium.Which 'dominant ideology' (to quote you) was Hollywood pushing when Chaplin pushed back ?
@ Anonymous4 February 2020 at 15:13
DeleteI am not Ros. Sorry - poorly expressed argument.
Yes, it was exactly that 15:13! He used film to tell the masses what was going on. 'Modern Times', CC working on a conveyer belt being force fed at his workstation so he doesn't have to take a break. 'The Great Dictator' the futility of war and the evil of Hitler. 'Monsieur Verdoux' - a direct attack and speech against weapons of mass destruction.
DeleteHe wasn't condemned for 'trying to corrupt the youth of America with his fancy ideas of peace' - he was condemned for being a communist, a fellow traveller, unpatriotic, and possibly Jewish. Also, his penchant for young starlets raised a few eyebrows.
Which dominant ideology was Hollywood pushing as opposed to Charlie Chaplin? Hollywood was pushing the Cold War, the red scare, reds under the bed, the invasion of the body snatchers and all encompassing triffids, you eejit, the evils of communism, see McCarthy trials.
At least familiarise yourself with a few facts before you start an argument on a subject you clearly know nothing about.
''He wasn't condemned for 'trying to corrupt the youth of America with his fancy ideas of peace' - he was condemned for being a communist, a fellow traveller, unpatriotic, and possibly Jewish. Also, his penchant for young starlets raised a few eyebrows.''
DeleteSo, he was out of favour for being Jewish. Even though the studios were all Jewish owned and Hollywood was founded and funded by Jews.OK.
'' 'The Great Dictator' the futility of war and the evil of Hitler.''
And Hollywood wouldn't have liked that either then. OK.The Great Dictator ended with Chaplin himself pleading with the audience to end war. That's what wasn't popular. That's what stamped his days as numbered. That, and his trying to suggest that Russia and America could be friends and allies. He had a point when you consider Russia's later contribution to the freeing of the Holocaust prisoners and their allegiance to Britain to bring the Nazis down.
''He wasn't condemned for 'trying to corrupt the youth of America with his fancy ideas of peace' ''
How about :
'' in one extreme and widely published example, Representative John E. Rankin, who helped establish HUAC, told Congress in June 1947: "[Chaplin's] very life in Hollywood is detrimental to the moral fabric of America. [If he is deported] ... his loathsome pictures can be kept from before the eyes of the American youth. He should be deported and gotten rid of at once.''
This is the propaganda exposing itself. This was Hollywood, movies and an actor who had won the hearts of millions with his 'little tramp' character. But look what it really was and still is.Propaganda and agenda-pushing. You see it as wonderful because it reflects that wonderful ' go gettit' attitude. The go chase the American dream nonsense. it's their to keep the American Dream mythology alive and well through the sleepy popcorn addicts naivety and ignorance.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlie_Chaplin
Well I am glad you checked Wiki before making a bigger fool of yourself. Do you know why Rankin called Chaplin's pictures loathsome? I look forward to hearing your answer.
DeleteWhat you call propaganda, others might call 'messages' or even subtext. Every good book, every good movie, every work of art and every enigmatic chord contains subtext. That is a story within a story, a subtle thread that runs through it, a message that reaches the audience on a visceral level. Look at 'The Immigrant' for example, a ship docks at New York filled with immigrants from Europe full of expectation in the land of the free. But the immigrants are herded into roped off sections, contained and treated like cattle, not quite so free as they expected. In a department store, the little tramp is watched and followed by the store detective while a rich woman covered in diamonds and furs is stealing everything in sight. Chaplin's early films were silent and his audience multinational, his messages were visual and his audience understood them. His messages were anti authoritarian, anti establishment, socialist, activist, he shows what happens when he picks up a red flag and follows a truck to return it, suddenly he has hundreds following him as he holds up the red flag. He wasn't corrupting America's youth, he was enlightening the working classes, opening their eyes to the injustices they suffered. The masses are kept in their place mostly through lack of education and ignorance, Chaplin was stirring up the masses to fight back.
But there, I answered it for you and as you can see, it was so much more than corrupting America's youth. I am laughing here, because in trying to disparage me you predictably went straight for 'think of the children'.
As for losing all his money, Chaplin was one of the few stars and millionaires to pull his money out of stocks before the Wall Street Crash. He is said to have been tipped off by his communist 'fellow traveller' connections to move his money before the market crashed, which he did.
"I am laughing here, because in trying to disparage me you predictably went straight for 'think of the children'."
DeleteIt seems you've misunderstood Z. It was Rankin, not Z, who "went straight for 'think of the children'".

DeleteYou've just described how well scripted propaganda works.
''It is a matter of public record that the Pentagon has had an entertainment liaison office since 1948. The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) established a similar position in 1996...Files we obtained, mainly through the US Freedom of Information Act, show that between 1911 and 2017, more than 800 feature films received support from the US Government’s Department of Defence (DoD)''
https://www.independent.co.uk/voices/hollywood-cia-washington-dc-films-fbi-24-intervening-close-relationship-a7918191.html
''When a writer or producer approaches the Pentagon and asks for access to military assets to help make their film, they have to submit their script to the entertainment liaison offices for vetting. Ultimately, the man with the final say is Phil Strub, the Department of Defense’s (DOD) chief Hollywood liaison.''

This discussion was about your Hollywood Dream factory reflecting the American Dream versus my version which calls it a propaganda tool.It wasn't about Charlie Chaplin. He was just part of the game. The real American Dream if we're honest, is world domination by any means and at any cost.It isn't that you can follow any yellow brick road to Oz.
He was anti- this and anti- that. But the bottom line is that he was anti-war.Or to put it in a way a true blue American can't say without wincing, a pacifist. He stood against war no matter how rich it made those who organised them.
By the way, i said he lost his stock in UA and took his money to Switzerland.I didn't say he lost his money. You misquoted or misunderstood. For a change.

ReplyDeleteActually, I missed a line, I studied the Hollywood Dream Factory at University, not online or via a correspondence course"
------------------------------------------------------
It's strange Ros but in all the years that I have followed your blog - I have never heard you mention going to University before or mentioning your achievements there?
They do degrees in anything these days. Must be fun studying for one in films. It could be your specialist subject if they ever revive Mastermind on TV.A BA in films. You might be able to tackle a Masters next in something like Famous Soap Operas.Clever stuff .
DeletePeople like you 20:29 always mock that which you do not understand. Firstly, Hollywood the Dream Factory, was just one module of my degree, and it wasn't so simple as just watching movies, bless, as anyone who has ever been to university will know. It was a study of the culture, history, politics, effects etc, of the 'Dream Factory' - all things I love and the reason why I chose it as one of my modules.
DeleteYour sarcastic, patronising post says more about you than me, only an ageing pompous ass would be so derogatory to the humanities and the arts.
Err, I don't watch soaps, I simply can't get on with the way in which everyone is so rude to each other, surely people don't act like this in real life, but going your post 20:29, it appears they do.
Do you think I just made it up on the spur of the moment 22:25? Yes, I was fortunate to go to University as a mature student. Among the happiest days of my life - mostly because we were a motley class of 'outsiders' who finally found others we could bond with. I think I have said, several times, within 6 weeks of starting the course, I knew there was no going back.
Delete'' People like you 20:29 always mock that which you do not understand''
DeleteHere's something I do understand then. Studying a module within a degree that covers Hollywood movies doesn't qualify you to drone on about their history and culture in the real world. It qualifies you to talk about movies and actors and directors and possibly some books they made films about.Maybe if you study the real world and the effects that America has had on it you'd see the difference. Begin with Washington and New York. Once you see the difference between films and reality you might learn something useful and enriching.

ReplyDeleteThere are 300 million people living in the US yet teaching the adult sector how to write an 'X ' on a piece of paper has really confounded them for years. So, forward thinking Uncle Sam got all futuristic and modern and they decided push-button technology was the way. After all, you can't tamper, programme, or alter a written 'X' if you need to.
The stolen election that put George Bush Jr in the big chair isn't that far behind us.Nor are the reports of the Obama votes that were cast by the long deceased who made comebacks for voting night despite them being 125 years old. Then there's the ongoing bickering between the moronic psychotics Hilary Clinton ( whose husband knows too well how rigged elections work) and Israel's bullet - proof Foreign Affairs Minister- or to give him his other title- President Donald Trump, arguing over whether or not Putin helped somebody out and a 30,000 'hacked' emails. You have to LOVE technology.Bullshit is so less messy when it's digital. And so more slick and efficient.
So, having failed to learn that the population are not equipped to handle pushing a button and those charged with counting votes can't actually count, what o they do- they go for something untried but potentially more flawed.Brilliant.This is the leader od the free world. It borders on hilarious.
A new and trendy 'app' was launched on Monday in IOWA ( idiots out walking about, I believe). What could possibly go wrong. It was surrounded by the best brains politicians whose integrity is beyond reproach. It's America dammit.
It all went wonderfully belly - up. The whole rigged nonsense ended up exposed. What timing, just as the Zioniist's Ziionist puppet was going through a show trial disguised as an impeachment, in which he too was STILL bullet - proof( we can't say he didn't warn us when he said ''i can do what i like'' ).
So who was behind the digital vote -rigger this time I wonder. Are we going for Putin again ? N0- that's too embarrassing. How about a Libyan or Syrian mad professor looking for revenge and dressed in tin cans.Nope- too embarrassing. No, this time it's a company superbly named in Superman ( the movie) style - Shadow Inc. Are they going for irony now ? I wonder who the Lex Luthor is. I suppose we shouldn't really point fingers yet. After all, It's the 'biggest democracy in the world'. I know this because it keeps saying it is and it's not like it would lie. Let's just wait for it to 'passover' ;)

ReplyDeleteLike his penchant for alarmingly young ladies ? He was well protected by highly placed people for that. Then once he spoke up against war and weapons he was painted as evil by America and Hollywood and accused of trying to turn the youth of America into peace lovers. Then his stock in United Artists mysteriously became worthless as the company's success increased. he went to Switzerland with his money to hide in safety for the rest of his life. That speaks volumes about the duplicitous ideology the yanks have always forced down everyone's throat. Hollywood advertises something that isn't for sale.Something that only exists in fantasy. The reality of it is that the country is a vicious oppressor of anyone refusing to play by their rules.Their rules being to control the freedom they pretend their citizens have and to take the assets of other countries by force and under false pretences . Is that what you call duplicitous ideology? Propaganda? It's the capitalist way dumbarse. Be glad it's not state sponsored coca cola and cornflakes and nothing else.
Using stories to impart messages is a narrative device that goes right back to the bible and beyond. Even children's fairy stories, poems and rhymes to demonstrate the difference between good and bad. Any good writer knows that they cannot write a good story without subtext, it's the driving force, it tells you how to write the next bit, how to let it grow and expand but still come to it's basic core. It's what lifts a book or a movie from average to iconic, it's the bit that makes you come out of the cinema saying, but this, but that, all those questions the writer asks you to ask yourself.
I have many times over the years disagreed quite harshly with American Foreign Policy but I in no way see the average American citizen as a vicious oppressor. It is not the citizens of the USA demanding that their government invade other countries and steal their oil, it is their leaders, Bush and Cheney during the war against Iraq and now Trump who is happily deploying troops to seize and guard the oil in Iran. He is starving the people of Iran while simultaneously stealing their wealth. Yes that appals me.
Yes, I will admit that the Arts industry is mostly left wing and liberal, naturally I find myself more aligned with them than with the in yer face capitalists on the right. But that's pretty much the way of the world, the artists and writers are always seen as the harbingers of unrest and civil disobedience. Justifiably some might say, because they use their stage to highlight injustice. Was Charlie Chaplin wrong to use cinema to point out to his audience of millions, that they were being exploited in the factories? Was Charles Dickens wrong to go into explicit detail about the wealthy Christians stepping over a dead street urchin on their way into church?
But I am curious 21:57, how would you go about banning subtext and messaging, a censorship board perhaps? I would say go read your bible, but it's way too full of messages for you, your head would explode.
Methinks in your quest to be an intellectual, you believe you should have a pompous attitude to popular culture - it makes you feel superior to pretend that the wireless and moving pictures are beneath you, your not Bennett are you? lol. The thing is, there is nothing intellectual about having a closed mind. It makes you uninformed and antiquated. OK, that can be charming, in very limited circles, but in reality it looks as though dementia or Alzheimers has set in. At least make an effort.
I am drumming this home my friend, because popular culture is the biggest thing in the world right now. Ignoring it is like discussing the years 1939 to 1945, without mentioning the war. We are going through an enlightenment revolution and the world is changing dramatically. You can stand on a pedestal preaching the first Oxford Dictionary, but you will be overwhelmed by the words and language that have developed since.
No-one can deny the impact Hollywood had on the rest of the world, especially during the Golden Age 1915-1963. For the first time many people saw what it was like to live without government oppression and the freedom to earn limitless amounts and to buy limitless luxury products. As a child of the 60's and already a huge movie fan, I didn't know anyone who had a house like they those in the USA, but my mum wore voluminous prom dresses, my dad wore voluminous Brilcream and my brother had a Bill Haley kiss curl.

''Using stories to impart messages is a narrative device that goes right back to the bible and beyond. Even children's fairy stories, poems and rhymes to demonstrate the difference between good and bad.''
Do you mean allegories ? They're purpose is to inform reader or listener of a truth, not a lie.The agenda of propaganda is to dress a lie up as a truth to deceive- not inform.
''I have many times over the years disagreed quite harshly with American Foreign Policy but I in no way see the average American citizen as a vicious oppressor. It is not the citizens of the USA demanding that their government invade other countries''
If you would have read carefully you'd have seen the accusation was that America is the oppressor of it's citizens and the citizens of other countries, not the actual citizens.
''Was Charles Dickens wrong to go into explicit detail about the wealthy Christians stepping over a dead street urchin on their way into church?''
No, he was right as it was really happening. It wouldn't have been propaganda.Propaganda would have been to show it but try to explain it away.
''But I am curious 21:57, how would you go about banning subtext and messaging, a censorship board perhaps?''
With transparency. No lies allowed to be advanced as truth.
''Methinks in your quest to be an intellectual, you believe you should have a pompous attitude to popular culture''
That's not my quest. I don't value intellectualism as much as you do.I value exposing liars and bullshit.
''OK, that can be charming, in very limited circles, but in reality it looks as though dementia or Alzheimers has set in. At least make an effort.''
Very intellectual.Any need ?
'' popular culture is the biggest thing in the world right now''
Britain has just left the EU. The President has been through an impeachment trial. The PM of Israel is facing charges of war crimes. So called big movers of Al Quaeda and ISIS are still being assassinated to the orders of the president of America.Popular culture isn;t the biggest thing happening in the world right now, 'my friend'.

Delete'' I have no idea if it is one or more people I am talking to here, re Hollywood, though the poster at 21:57 seems to hate the USA the most. You are kind of like a conspiracy theorist inside a conspiracy theorist in your belief that everyone is out to get you, especially those yanks.''
A couple of things stick out of that long and angry diatribe of a post, Rosalinda.
Your opinions ( which as usual are expressed as craved-in-stone facts because they happen to be yours) have been challenged and an alternative and more reasonable opinion have challenged their validity.Your response, as it is all too often, is to become offensive and insulting. Alzheimers ? Really ?
It has long been an accepted fact that Propaganda infiltrates all major media outlets and the entertainment industry. It stands to reason, does it not, that if you have an agenda to push, you go to where the biggest crowd will be watching or listening.Germany were adept at it during WW2 and all they had was the radio entertainment medium.
You accuse the poster of something on the subject of being a conspiracy theorist. The conspiracy being that 2 or more people have conspired to do something illegal, bad, or against someone's wishes ( if we stick to dictionary definitions).I think the most relevant of the three descriptors is 'bad' even though it's abstract and subjective. But I'd suggest it's bad to try to indoctrinate a population by lying to it and shaping it's opinions in order to foment hostility against something or somebody, or a group. Especially bad is when a Government of a nation does it in order to justify hostility against another nation that will be supported by it's people.
Given the above and that elsewhere on the thread there are a a couple of provided links that point to a long, close and successful relationship has existed between Hollywood- America's biggest branch of the movie and entertainment industry, and the CIA, the Central Intelligence Agency, it begs the question of why it has been so.The industry has a board of censors of it's own so why does the CIA need to be on board ?
''The Central Intelligence Agency is a civilian foreign intelligence service of the federal government of the United States, tasked with gathering, processing, and analyzing national security information from around the world, primarily through the use of human intelligence.''
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_Intelligence_Agency
So, it would seem that any accusations of 'conspiracy' are valid.Unless of course you can offer a good explanation of why the CIA are so closely interested in movies. The very fact that Hollywood turned on Charlie Chaplin because he made anti- war films and he had to go from where he was once revered to a neutral country and retire should tell you how powerful a tool of Propaganda Hollywood is. It would, by extension, confirm the conspiracy. It's common sense.

Yes, Ros, he has to be a conspiracy theorist as the evidence says the complete opposite of the Hollywood Dream factory's scripts and screenplays. All that evidence is just to make the conspiracy theory look guilty. All those wars, all that poverty at home and all the war crimes committed in the name of 'freedom'.
You need to understand, at best, the movies as an escape are just that- an escape. From reality. The worse reality looks and feels the more the need to escape and live vicariously. If you don't have the dream, go to the movies and watch a few .
Since the ended WW2 America have upped the ante. When the world was fooled by the show trials of Nuremberg and the hanging Nazis they didn't see the real evil big movers and shakers from the Nazi Party being rescued by America, who were supposed to be leading the war against Nazism( remember ?). They shipped in a couple of thousand of the real pieces of work, gave them new names, papers, homes and, most importantly - a place to continue their evil and manic quest to rule the world.See ' Operation Paperclip'. The spokesman just have American accents now.So they must be the good guys right ? After WW 2 and all that.Yep, sure thing..
Post '45 the technological advances in weapons of mass destruction took giant and rapid strides thanks to the 'new Americans'. No expense was spared. No expense is spared now either .The fact that tens of millions of children in the home of brave, land of the free and the American Dream are living below the poverty line and the numbers are matched only by the population of the homeless tells you the real cost. And this is the country you believe- because of movies you've 'studied'- says 'yeah man..believe in yourself and you can do it''. A line from a self help manual to soothe the starving millions. Can we buy it ? ''Yes we can!''.
Study some facts and figures instead of movies and what the stars are wearing. You might learn something of some worth.Or at least wake up.

The rulers of that country hate freedom.Like they hate truth.” Nothing to do with advertising cola and conflakes, nor with the Americans as such.

It's not been a couple of good months for you has it Ros.

Trump impeachment failed.
All three things were obvious to most people apart form you.

No it hasn't been a good couple of months 22:53, thank you for pointing it out. As a manic depressive, I have happily been able to take somewhat of a sojourn from reality, or the reality that is British politics and the evil of the far right taking over the world. That sets us on the path to another holocaust.
DeleteI have, in all honestly, been glued to the antics of Trump and the horrific realisation that there may be no way of getting rid of him. He fixed the 2016 election, with all the government resources and no checks on his power, what will he do with this year's election? It's scary, and should be sending me off in the direction of Beachy Head, but I am able to stay emotionally detached. I am an observer, a spectator, no more than that.
I am sorry that I am not as distressed as you might have hoped 22:53, if anything I feel as though a burden has been lifted. That is the thing with the little voice of hope calling out from the bottom of Pandora's box, while hope is there, it torments you. Once it is gone, you are free.
As for 12:31 heaping on the agonies, I couldn't care less about the McCanns, even if they made headlines, I doubt I would switch on to watch. I have entered a new phase of my life which is entirely different and I am enjoying it.
Trump, Boris, Gerry and Kate, all beyond my control and I'm OK with it. If I were younger and more passionate, I would probably take a more activist stance, but now I am happy to step back. Well for the moment at least, but as a commitment phobe, I can't even commit to that.
I can relate to a lot of that. We're on our way to hell in a handcart as the saying goes.Weird that the most of the damage and craziness is coming from the 'leader of the free world, the world's greatest democracy'. You have to love the irony. Uncle Sam running wild like a kid who swallowed too many M 'n' Ms and found guns and scissors. Trump couldn't fix an election.he can't even fix his hair.Mad bastard. But the election was fixed way ahead of time anyway by people who have the power and ability.A puppet never writes his own scripts or does his own choreography. He's a puppet. He just has to look like he has. That's what the audience watch for in the first place.Who fixed it ? Look at the clues. He is still on a killing spree abusing his power and position and his targets are all Muslim.History will tell you that the Muslim has one sworn enemy and it;s been that way for thousands of years. Well before America existed. America has the selling point. The 'cover' if you like. It's supposedly a democracy and supposedly anti- dictatorship( yes, seriously). In reality there's a contract out on Islam. It's paid for.Badda bing. Enter the swaggering celebrity with his big talk and John Wayne acting skills and lines that even 1940s B and C movies wouldn't have scripted.Trump has the points that matter. He is ignorant ; he has a God complex; he is well known for dealing in huge properties ; and he has that all important factor- celebrity. He was already famous and he gave the impression of being that American 'winner'.Now they have a demented power hungry halfwit next to the big red button on the left and the Twitter 'send' button on his right. Does Donald really know his left from his right ? How sure are you.I know I'm not.
DeleteWe have his poodle here, Boris. Like all good Tory PMs, he'll do as he's told when he's told. They have a common enemy through their contract with a common financier . They just call it a strong allegiance and drone on about the wars. Two caricatures leading us . Onward Christian soldiers. Welcome to the era of the panto baddie. The Simon Cowell compulsive viewing gone too far.If he ran for PM here he'd win too. He's famous.A 'celeb'.
The McCann thing has gone quiet at last. For now anyway. It's only February. We know the steps. A suspect gets 'found' in hidden files, or 'new witnesses' around April, the request for money May, the money paid, the new lead back in the bin. as you were.I have a feeling now that they'll call it a day.Madeleine would be 16 this anniversary.A landmark in the UK.They can use the landmark as the excuse and out it to bed on the cold shelf.I see the sone of the Nanny murdered by Lord Lucan claims to have finally tracked him down at a Buddhist retreat. He's informed the met. He;s given them the address and details and other witnesses agree he resembles Lucan( how?) even though he's had extensive cosmetic surgery. It could well be him. What are the chances the met say the DNA 'secretly obtained' say otherwise. After all, imagine a member of the public doing the yard's job far more efficiently for only 30 grand over the years.Plus they'd look like they'd been party to a cover up if Joe Public could find him so easily.
Let's just put the seat belts on; get some popcorn, drink some brew then, when it hits the fan, surf into space a la 'Dark Star', the only sci-fi movie worth watching ;)

I take note of your comment. My curiosity was aroused particularly by your “thousands of years”.

I appreciate that. Your original comment: “I have a feeling now that they'll call it a day.Madeleine would be 16 this anniversary.A landmark in the UK.They can use the landmark as the excuse and out it to bed on the cold shelf.”
Madeleine’s 16th birthday was last year. I presumed that your “this anniversary” referred to this year’s May 12.
Yours ever affectionately

'Islam is an Abrahamic-monotheistic religion based upon the teachings of Prophet Muhammad ibn Abdullah (l. 570-632 CE, after whose name Muslims traditionally add “peace be upon him” or, in writing, PBUH). Alongside Christianity and Judaism, it is a continuation of the teachings of Abraham (featured in both Jewish and Christian scriptures, considered a prophet in Islam, after whose name Muslims say, “peace be upon him” as well), although it does differ in some respects from both of these. The adherents of Islam are referred to as Muslims, of which there are around two billion in the world today, second only to Christians in number.'

Good day to you Major..
DeleteRe 'thousands of years'. I believe i was alluding to that great tome of fairy tales we know as the Bible and it's sister publication the Torah. The good old days Of 'Let my people go' and other songs. Yes, I know Mohamed didn't arrive until much later- later even than the king of the allegories himself, Jesus. It was more a geographic point I suppose. It's Islamic territory now is it not.I didn't imply that the Jews were seemingly put on the earth to claim constant martyrdom. As if I would ;)
Yes. Madeleine is ( or would be) 16 on the anniversary of her disappearance- 5 days before her birthday. So she will ( would be) 17 on that birthday.
Regarding the unprovoked attacks on me, they're nothing new old sport. We know this. They can be bizarre at times.Apologies would raise their sorry status off the floor a tad i have to add.Hell freezing over springs to mind.
I smile at the madness. Hence i find it difficult to purse my lips and blow.Somewhere in the middle i look disturbed. Like a psychopathic mime artist frozen in time. It's in everyone's best interest that I remain calm, cool and. above all, hard to resist.
I'm glad your circulation has improved.I take it the straijackets are Laura Ashley's Winter collection 1962 ? A fine choice. It brings out your natural confusion.
PS. Kill them all, save yourself.

The Corbyn hate offensive is still going on – it will continue until Labour becomes an openly Thatcherite party with membership of the LFI a condition of candidacy for any seat. And nobody, nobody anywhere, will be allowed to refer to the media/Centrist orchestrated hate campaign nor to the virtual non existence of anti Semitism in the Party. Comments that do are already being swiped from the Guardian’s CiF.
