DON'T GET CAUGHT IN THE SECOND WAVE AND MAKING CHIPS

So what have I been doing during this long sojourn, an angry reader asks, implying that my absence from my blog is some kind of insult to my readers.  It isn't of course.  I appreciate my readers, because when you are a struggling writer it is very difficult to get anyone to read your work, let alone provide feedback!  That people return again and again is a wonderful compliment.  As long is someone is reading me, I will carry on writing.

Most of my time and attention has been focussed on the craziness of Donald Trump.  I listen to and watch news all my waking hours, even when exercising and making jam, which I have now taken up - I only make small amounts as I need it, sooo much nicer than preserves.  But tis true I should be focussed on the craziness of Boris Johnson, and in the past I would have been, but Trump has taken lunacy to a whole new level.  I have been watching his nightly press conferences in fascination, actually in shock and awe. I despise him, but I can't look away.  There is nothing he will not do to grab attention and headlines, he is, in his head, smashing his oppoponents for the entertainment of his base.  Like Jerry Springer, he is just 2 seasons away from removing the chairs so they will have more room to fight.  He is empowered because he has got away with not revealing his tax returns, Russian interference in the 2016 election and impeachment.  He feels free to do whatever he wants.

Right now the USA is in the midst of the pandemic and all the science shows it is not going away.  The infection rate is slowly going down as a result of the shut down.  Re-opening would start it up again.  The same thing happened during the 1918 Spanish flu - when people started to go out again there was another wave, much bigger and far more deadly, and it wasn't the last.  The scientists, those not watched over by Trump, are very clear, the pandemic is far from over.

Trump has said that other people, not himself, would advise 'get back up on the horse', 'take it on the chin', 'let the virus do it's worst', after all most people get over it.   It is obvious those 'other people' are indeed himself, and he is just using it as a ruse to get those ideas out there.  And it's working, some of his supporters protesting the shut down carried banners that said 'Sacrifice the week' (sic).  The weak are a sacrifice Trump is willing to make in order to re-open his hotels.  Unfortunately he was told that 2 million lives lost was a worse case scenario, ergo, anything below that he will consider a success.

I am hoping that before Trump fully launches his genocide, that the doctors, generals, scientists et al, who waste 2+ hours each day standing behind him, or sitting on the sidelines during these critical times, will face the fact that the President is stark raving mad.  That his promotion of untested drugs is wrong (and dangerous), that encouraging civil unrest is wrong, that claiming the coronavirus is going away is wrong.  I always wonder what Trump has that demands such grovelling and subservience from his underlings.  All I can think of is, he's got something on them.  That's a tough one with Dr. Birx, but he may be holding her family hostage.

Boris Johnson is convalescing in Checkers, a stately home for the relaxation and enjoyment of Prime Ministers, a place where they can take a break from public and media scrutiny.  Lucky him, I am sure our reporters have quite a few probing questions, my first would be 'so how do you feel about taking it on the chin now?'.

My kindest wishes to all who still look in, and I hope that you are keeping healthy, mentally and physically.  I am trying to stick to healthy foods, 7 fruit and veg a day!  Not easy given the bare shelves and all, but achievable if you put your mind to it and like lentils!  And yes, I am counting my homemade jam as one of my 7 a day!  So too the piece of dried up old lemon I added to my G&T. Where previously I would have turned up my hooter, I am eating bread hovering on the eat by date and a weird variety of soups/stews, chillies and curries, all a mystery until I defrost them because I didn't bother to fill in the convenient labels when I froze them.  I really want to throw them out but my conscience nags me, they were in fact put in the freezer 'in case of an apocalypse', and deh, here we are.

The shortages are actually making me creative on the cooking front.  I can get potatoes, I can get cooking oil, I have a heavy bottomed saucepan - I can make homemade chips!  Egg and chips has always been in my top ten of meals to have should I find myself on death row with multiple menus.  And we kids of the 60s know that homemade chips can turn anything into a scrumptious meal.  My dear old dad mastered the art, and declared that forever more, chips should be cooked 'his way'.  That is, they should be cut into chip shapes, raw, dried off a bit with kitchen roll, then plunged into oil so hot that it bubbles when the chips are added.  They should be fried for approx. 5 minutes, until just before they begin to turn brown, then removed from the oil from a couple of moments. allowing the oil to get back to maximum heat, then the chips should be plunged back in, for approx. 2/3 minutes.  They will brown immediately at this point.  Take out, drain on kitchen paper, then keep warm in oven while you cook the next batch!

I had hoped to end this blog with something poignant and meaningful, instead I give a recipe for chips!  Should you attempt them, that is making chips without a bespoke chip fryer, as we did in the old days, ha ha, make safety your top priority.  That is put the pan with oil on a back burner and never leave it alone untended, even for one moment.  Dry the chips off with kitchen towel before lowering them into the oil, water makes hot oil splash.  And make sure you turn the gas off when done.  Making chips takes 15/20 minutes, give it your full attention and the result will be delicious.

If you are looking in Bjorn, I was heartened to see Princess Sofia volunteering to help health professionals in a local hospital with coronavirus patients.  Not the glamorous stuff, but the cleaning, cooking and care, what a wonderful example she is!

  1. Yes Rosalinda, Princess Sofia is special. As a teenager she was involved in charity and in aid work in South Africa, among many other things. She has also openly told us about her rather messy life among partying friends in Stockholm, before she got to know Prince Daniel, who for his part, has struggled with dyslexia throughout his life. So even though they in a sense are privileged people, it’s still easy for many young Swedes to see themselves in this young couple.

    2. H Bjorn, thank you for responding to my mention of your Princess Sofia. I remain enchanted.

Sweden has been much in the news this week with regard to the stance they are taking towards Covid-19. I hasten to add the coverage hasn't been condemnatory, more curiosity from the outside world as to what would happen if you do not close businesses and allow the virus to run it's course. Unfortunately, it will only be when the final statistics come in that we will discover which was the best way. Lockdown or herd immumity.

We were shown scenes of Swedish towns where life was pretty much carrying on as normal, though many wore masks. This came in a week where stats for Sweden began to escalate, that is those testing positive and deaths. Even with my limited scientific knowledge I know this rise in the curve is expected with the 'herd' strategy. The goal is long term, the thinking, the population will develop herd immunity and the virus will die out. Those countries the limit exposure to the virus will be fighting an eternal war until they find a vaccine.

Those are hard choices. Both have arguments for and against. As a Swedish citizen Bjorn, what are your views? Should add, we are supposedly in lockdown, but are competing for the top spot with the USA.

”Those are hard choices. Both have arguments for and against. As a Swedish citizen Bjorn, what are your views? Should add, we are supposedly in lockdown, but are competing for the top spot with the USA”

I am sorry, but I haven’t had time to read your blog for some time Rosalinda, because I have taken up my studies from the past in the Russian language on my own, just as a therapy to survive mentally during these times of crisis.

It is true Rosalinda, that we may have chosen a very risky, still a voluntary strategy based on recommendations from the health authorities, ie not from the state. We can move freely outside in nature as well as in the towns. Elderly people are asked not to go shopping, but instead order groceries directly to their doors. We do so.

All indoor youth activities regarding sports are now taking place outside in the fresh air. Physically, the Swedish lycée /s/ (pupils aged 16-19) are closed as are all universities, but teaching and examinations continue as usual, but through the internet, by teaching methods we had developed long before the covid-19 break-out.

No public gatherings of more than 50 people and a distance of 2 meters between people regardless of context are recommended and people seem to accept it. There are always, in particular young people in Stockholm, who do not care.

Anyway, regarding the herd immunity process that you mentioned Rosalinda, Sweden may have found a balance between on the one hand protective measures and a human bearable social life on the other hand. I’m a little bit reluctant to accept a lockdown for too long time as the case is in many European countries, because we all may have to live with the threat of this virus for more than a year and we’ve to endure life.

We must not forget, that we here in Sweden live in a sparsely populated country Rosalinda. I myself, as you know, live in Linköping, Sweden's fifth largest city, yet probably smaller than Stevenage in England. So our prerequisites to deal with the spread of the infection are a little different compared to the UK, I’d say.

As for myself, I feel that it wouldn’t be morally right to go up north to our holiday cottage under those circumstances, though our dog would like to, but of course that’s a luxury problem, so I shouldn’t really complain.

I understand that all is well with you Rosalinda, makes me glad to hear. Your blog helps me a lot in my survival and I promise that I’ll put my Russian grammar aside from time to time to look into your blog.

      Have a nice day

    6. I am seriously impressed with your Russian grammar project but a tad ashamed at my own pathetic attempts to learn Spanish. On the plus side, I have, after a lifetime of trying, managed to make the perfect Quiche Lorraine, more particularly the perfect pastry! I went into it with a scientific approach and tried every combination of ingredients, oven temperature and cooking times. When I'm on a quest, the OCD really kicks in. I think with my earlier attempts I gave up too soon and I gave up altogether when ready made pastry became available. Perserverence is the key and a determination not to give up until you achieve the desired result. I am so happy about my achievement, I feel I should have a graduation hat to throw up in the air!

Thank you so much for putting Sweden's strategy into context Bjorn, I can see now how different our two countries are, particularly with population and the geographical differences. The UK is of course a virtual petri dish with crowded inner cities and packed buses and trains.

The UK also has it's own equivalent of the USA's 'deplorables'. That is, far right loonies who still see coronavirus as a liberal hoax and who flaunt the rules. Rebels without a clue methinks.

I'm not usually a pessimist Bjorn, but I think this is going to go on for quite a long time, and the UK will be hit particularly badly. We have the history right in front of us, the Spanish Flu, yet we are hurtling into a deadly second wave.

For myself, I have decided to take full responsibility for my own health. I'll be the judge on whether it is safe to go out, thank you very much. I will be proceeding with extreme caution and with as much information as I can find. It is difficult to find information relating to the exact area where I live*, which is worrying. So far I have only heard of one person nearby who was positive and sadly died. I'm not however in any way reassured by not hearing about it in the local vicinity. Sadly, I do not think we have hit the peak yet. There hasn't been nearly enough testing to gauge how active the virus is and how far it has spread. I think going back to normal will provide the answer, but not in a good way.

These are tough times - I feel we are in a disaster movie, but like yourself I am trying to find ways to keep myself occupied. I never thought I would have enough time to learn how to make the perfect pastry, but I did. What next? Maybe rough puff or flakey? I jest, though I may have a go at making croissants.

I have to say, while thinking, sadly, that there will be no new movies, dramas or documentaries (thank heavens I don't watch soaps, unless the Walking Dead counts) for a year, or maybe even 2. That's it folks, what we have now is all we've got.

For myself, I am happily enjoying 'foreign' films more than I ever have before. And that's just laziness on my part, when I have to read the subtitles, I can't nod off. It is like a whole new source of entertainment and enlightenment.

You have a nice day too, and my sympathy for your dog. I had a little rescue dog for 16 years, he loved nothing more than running wild in the woods and around the lakes!

  4. Hi Rosalinda,
Today's White House press conference was unforgettable.

Poor Dr Birx sat looking at the floor while the President glanced at her from time to time for approval, all the while suggesting ultraviolet radiation and injecting Dettol into the human bloodstream might be an idea to fight COVID 19.
The good doctor ended up blasting him out of the water with a gentle reply saying - she'd never heard of such a treatment before.

(Dettol and Lysol quickly got into the act later in the day with simplistic press releases warnings about following instructions on their products - as if the public already didn't know).

Outrageousness apart, Trump is thinking November elections. He has to get the economy going again even if takes the mind of a child to do so.

Actually there was more to come when a reporter from the floor asked him a question and Trump pointed directly at himself and then back to the reporter with the unforgettable words; "I am the President - you are fake news".

Imagine JFK or Eisenhower coming out with words like that - but I suppose in those times long ago most news was real.

    Talking about cooking: Jam.
I tried to make blackberry jam last summer and only after tripling the sugar and the pectin amounts did I finally got it to set right. What a stubborn berry that is. I think I'll stay with Blackcurrant jam which sets like a rock - no pectin required.
    Sweet dreams.

    2. I have been watching the nightly press conferences in horror and fascination JC. Trump has taken insanity to a whole new level! We are two days on now, sorry for delay, but the nightly briefing have come to a halt. Which is a shame, was looking forward to reporters grilling him on Dettol. I don't they his advisors will be able to stop him for very long - he needs the buzz of his battles with reporters, he is playing to his base, showing them what a tough guy he is. Unfortunately for him, he is not a very complex character, he wears every hurt and grievance on his sleeve, he would be useless at poker.

Ahh, as for the jam JC, I don't use pectin or large quantities, those I do have jam sugar. I just use one punnet of berries, one large spoon of normal sugar and a splash of water, simmer for about 10 mins, allow to cool, and voila! It is divine on fresh, brown, seedy bread. I've always though you had to make jam in huge batches, ergo I rarely attempted it. Now I do the small size, I make it all the time.

I call it healthy, though some may beg to differ ha ha, but it also goes great with scones and Greek yoghurt. Who knew Greek yoghurt was such a perfect low calorie substitute for cream?

    3. Imagine JFK or Eisenhower bragging about their prowess with models? Imagine Obama bragging about being number 1 on Facebook or telling a mass audience he is a very stable genius?

The trouble with Trump's lunacy is that we don't know what the 'end' looks like, is this it? are we there yet? If advising people to inject disinfectant is not the worst, what is?

The USA has more people infected with the Coronavirus than anywhere else in the world, more deaths than anywhere else. As much as Trump brags that other countries are worse and that the USA is doing well, everyone can see that isn't true.

The USA is likely to be hit worst of all because many don't have health insurance or a benefit system to support them while they are out of work. Poverty, malnutrition and poor health will escalate as the coronavirus spreads. I'm not one to pray, but right now I really do pray for the American people, they desperately need a strong, competent, honest leader to take care of the nation's response to the pandemic. Trump doesn't want the responsibility because he doesn't want the blame. He knows this catastrophic, but he thinks when this is all over, and the historians start putting the pieces together, they will blame China and the States' Governors, not him, he kept out of it.

He is, right now, completely out of ammunition and plans. His dopey son Don Jr, is doing his utmost to stir up some kind sex scandal about Joe Biden, but literally no-one is interested. While the Trumps have managed to delude themselves that there is no pandemic, the rest of the world is aware and fully switched on. When the topic of the day is over 50,000 dead since February, 'but what about the Bidens', sounds like a pathetic whine rather than strategy.

For instance, last time comments were refreshed ~28 hours ago. I think the fear of opening the inbox no longer cuts it. If a job is worth doing, it’s worth doing well. It would seem that false eyelashes, Walking Dead, Donald etc. take precedence over those who give their time and effort to contribute to the blog. Reciprocity has been completely forgotten. A diet of streams of consciousness mixed with cooking recipes, complaints and offensive remarks has become nauseating. Agitprop in America
    By John Harmon McElroy
    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Agitprop-America-John-Harmon-McElroy-ebook/dp/B086BC6S1L/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=Agitprop+in+America+By+John+Harmon+McElroy&qid=1587825147&s=books&sr=1-1

Wherever the Marxist agenda is found, it has always followed the same simple formula: Destroy and Rebuild. Agitprop, the technique invented by Lenin to rouse his fellow Russians to overthrow the government of czarist Russia, has been used in the United States since the 1960s and is still being used to destroy America’s culture and rebuild it as Cultural Marxism.

Agitprop in America identifies this attempted “transformation” of the United States as an anti-American movement, which has been variously called “the culture war,” “the counter culture,” and “political correctness.” By analyzing the movement’s dogmas and methods, including the manipulation of American speech, and by trenchant comments on cultural history, this book provides the understanding needed to thwart the imposition of an alien, atheistic culture on the United States. European readers may find Agitprop in America of some use in the cultural crisis which they face.

“Instead of overturning the U.S government by force and taking comprehensive control of the United States all at once, the Counter Culture/Political Correctness Movement has been engaged for the last fifty years in gradually but relentlessly transforming the United States from within little by little, by co-opting its institutions and destroying existing cultural beliefs slowly and methodically, and replacing them with the dogmas of Marxism.

“Political correctness represents itself as a champion of fundamental American values. That brazen pretence, that Marxism is identical to American liberalism and progressivism, is why the Counter Culture/Political Correctness movement has had so much success in the United States.

“Normal minds of course find it difficult to believe in a “culture war” that has gone on for half a century and that aims to transform the world’s oldest, most successful republic into a center for Cultural Marxism. Because the project is so audacious, it has taken many middle-class Americans a long time to believe such a movement exists; and many middle-class Americans apparently still refuse to believe a systematic assault is underway on American culture and has been going on in America for fifty years. But whether you believe it or not, a culture war is in progress in America, as evidenced by the fact that many Americans now prefer the dogmas of Marxism to the beliefs of American culture.

“Now, after five decades of relentless Marxist agitation and propaganda promoting biological class consciousness in America, courses on U.S. history and Western civilization have dwindled and all but disappeared at American colleges and universities while courses on biological class consciousness have proliferated. Everywhere today in U.S. institutions of higher education, one finds courses and degree programs in Women’s Studies, African-American Studies, Mexican-American Studies, and LGBT studies. And as college and university faculties have become more uniform in their Political Correctness, the courses on U.S. history and Western civilization which remain in the curriculum are almost invariably taught from the point of view of Marxian class struggle, which is to say from the standpoint that straight “Euro-American” males (SEAMs) comprise a ruling class which has “victimized” women, negro Americans, Hispanics, Asian-Americans, homosexuals, and other biologically defined classes. College students today are being taught to hate SEAMs as a class for the “victimisation” they have allegedly inflicted on all other biological classes in America.

    1. Are you the poster I offended by pointing out the difference between communism and capitalism? Your posts look as though you aiming for an A in political science with your purported understanding of the American education system. Now even if you are an American Citizen who has been through the education system, you can't possibly know what is being taught in every school, college and University in the USA.

Whilst it is true that most scholars lean towards the left (Hitler had lists of scholars and academics to execute once he invaded England), scholars, academics and educators are singular and unique, each different to the other and you would know that if you went to university. The idea that they are all united in teaching Marxism to the masses is loony toons on a Hitler scale.

You finish off with a plea for compassion for Straight Euro-American Males (SEAMS) as if they are a marginalised ethnic group. Try watching Trump's press conferences - they are filled with fat, white, middle aged men, straight or pretending to be like Mike Pence, SEAMS, Trump who clearly enjoys male company to women's, is surrounded by them.

He also taught at Clemson University, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and, as a Fulbright Professor of American Studies, at universities in Spain (Salamanca) and Brazil (Santa Catarina). 9. Perhaps I did 14:45, but I am not interested in getting into a debate with a c/p excerpt from an academic book. I like to talk to T and respond to his posts when he is on the same plane, but the subjects he raises with these posts, ie. Marxism and the plight of straight, white, middle aged males doesn't stir me enough to get up on a soapbox.

Ok, maybe for a moment. Putting aside the entire history of the world, we are presently in the midst of a catastrophic pandemic where the two countries who are failing the most, are led by straight, white, middle aged men who are surrounded by straight white middle aged men. Boris Johnson has made a couple of nods towards diversity, but Trump simply doesn't care.

I was thinking this morning, what would be happening in the USA now if Hilary Clinton had been elected? I have no doubt she would have utilised the full force of the federal government to unite all the States from the start. Where Trump's advisors are Jared and Ivanka, she had Bill Clinton, Barack Obama and Joe Biden and probably George Bush too. Instead they have a narcissistic sociopath intent on re-opening the country (his golf clubs) to a far bigger and deadlier second wave. God help them.

“And btw, as Trump is murdering thousands, Godwin's Law no longer applies.”

      You are wrong again.

“Godwin's law (or Godwin's rule of Hitler analogies) is an Internet adage asserting that "as an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches 1". That is, if an online discussion (regardless of topic or scope) goes on long enough, sooner or later someone will compare someone or something to Adolf Hitler or his deeds, the point at which effectively the discussion or thread often ends.
      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godwin%27s_law

Please don’t argue, just admit to yourself that you are wrong, that’s the first step towards being ready to become enlightened. The second step is to admit to others that you are wrong. There many more steps to take. There is no certainty. Once you are completely at ease with the first two, I might tell you more. Of this you can be certain.

Ahhh it was divine, the lemon meringue that is. It took hours to make, which I don't remember from years ago when I used to make it regularly. Probably because my pastry making was poor to mediocre in those days - I never let it rest in fridge before cooking it, and I didn't bake the pastry case before adding the filling.

Now, having lots of time and the advice of Mary Berry and Delia Smith at my fingertips, I can now make perfect pastry! I'm ecstatic, it's been a long, long journey, but I'm there! My lemon meringue pie was perfect - worthy of a Paul Hollywood handshake!

    1. I have bought some face masks online and wear one for essential food runs. The science tells us we are actually protecting others by wearing a face mask, rather than ourselves, but I feel safer wearing one. I also sanitise my hands constantly while out, I err towards extra caution because I'm pretty certain I would not survive should I catch it.

      Delete
    2. There's nothing to catch. Masks you wear are to protect others from you not you from them. The same way a surgeon wears one over an opened body. The thing they call covid 19 isn't airborne. You can't catch it by touch either. It's all window dressing and props. And the laws are changing daily to allow any hint of a flu or cold germ to be interpreted as a coronavirus cause of death. Why do they need to bend rules to make it look huge on paper ? Is it because they're lying. Is it so the final number they have in mind will be big enough for the compulsory vaccinations that will turn us into compliant automatons at Mr Gates beck and call ? Of course it is. Big Brother is Uncle Samming You

      Delete
    3. I don't thank you for your alternate reality 21:05 because it is the kind of thinking an 11 year old glue sniffer would come up with. Do you honestly think Big Brother has fabricated a global pandemic in order to inject you and your fellow paranoids with a vaccine to turn you into an automaton? Especially as you have already achieved that status all by yourself?

And the James Bond villain in all this, Bill Gates! One of the first technological innovators who brought access to information to every citizen of the world. Bill Gates is also a philanthropist, not a trait commonly found in James Bond villains. Tis true, the USA was the biggest contributor to the World Health Organisation, the second biggest contributor, Bill Gates. Now I can see how that would feed your batshit crazy conspiracy theory, but if you watch Bill Gates 2015 TED talk on pandemics and listen carefully, you may get an understanding of what philanthropism is all about. The work of Bill Gates and WHO is not about turning people into automatons, it's about saving people in the event of a virulent, deadly virus.

As to masks, yes, yes, yes I understand they are about protecting others, but wearing a mask makes me feel safe, it may be a false sense of security, but I am OK with that. I don't want anyone else's coughs and sneezes, albeit the droplets are invisible, anywhere near my mouth and nose.

While living near a forest, I had to look up “neck of the woods”. It seems that once upon a time "neck" described a narrow strip of land, usually surrounded by water, based on its resemblance to the neck of an animal. It is always nice to learn something new.

Me and mine are fine for now, but in our immediate vicinity a care counselor needed hospitalisation and two older people with existing health problems have died after contracting COVID-19. Primary schools and childcare will reopen on May 11, but other lockdown measures continue, and rightly so.

    2. Hi NL, thank you for your post and I am glad to see that you are all keeping well. Like yourself, I have heard of a couple of cases nearby, but no clusters that I have heard of, and the local hospitals seem to be coping. My biggest fear, I'm sure everyone's, is a deadlier second wave. I spent a few hours reading about the Spanish Flu (1918) the other night. It was call 'Spanish' flu, because post WWI, Spain was the only country with a free press, ergo the only country reporting it.

Unfortunately, in 1918, when the world re-opened, it brought on a bigger, deadlier, second wave. The difference, the scientists in 1918 knew a lot less than the scientists of today. It may be that we are better equipped to prevent a second wave.

I am usually more of a glass half full with room for vodka kind of gal, but I don't see life returning to normal anytime soon. Regardless of what the leaders and politicians say, many people will be led by their own sense of survival. But at the moment the result of re-opening is unknown. Young people I would imagine, are probably feeling it the hardest, I know as a teenager, I would have gone insane if I couldn't see my friends.

Yes, re, the page views, it is nice to see that people are still dropping in, even during times when I am less than productive, it drives me to keep going and that's a good thing. My kindest wishes to you and yours NL, take care

    3. Odd post Humility, but I was touched to read the kind words of Blacksmith, he was a gentleman, a scholar and a kind friend. I also loved the quote from Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, one of all time favourite movies, and movie quotes and anyone who loves that movie can't be all bad.

I have been a collector of quotes my entire life, I started buying books filled with them from my late teens onwards. Now they are all available online and I can spend hours reading the quotes of all the authors, actors, artists, politicians and characters that I admire. But 'just for jolly'*, here's a quote from Marlon Brando. 'I had to read Wuthering Heights for English and I never enjoyed a book in all my life as much as that one'

Aaaah, as if I couldn't love him enough! A guy, a man who loved the passion and story telling of a female (feminist) writer at a very early age. I have to say, I too had to study Wuthering Heights for English (O-level) and was similarly struck. Perhaps because it was my first introduction to literature with the character of a strong, feisty (sp. nearly got tripped up by the i before e rule there) woman taking centre stage. I wanted to be Catherine, I wanted to find my Heathcliff. In retrospect, I probably should never have read it. Doh!

But for Marlon Brando to cite this as his favourite book, is telling on so many levels. Firstly, it is not an easy read. It is written in the prose of the 19th century and filled with words that have long since dropped out of our vocabulary. It is also a feminist book, Catherine is the one with all the power - almost throughout. It is so female driven, it is hard to imagine a man, loving it in the same way as a woman. Now there's a gauntlet thrown down, lol.

I would say if Marlon Brando loved Wuthering Heights, then he definitely loved and understood women, perhaps that's what made him so attractive and endearing.

Every time I come across one, I feel so much at home, you know that lovely warm feeling. And you are so erudite, and you win every argument, and you are always right, you are always so tender. And you are a collector of quotes! Oops, I hope you don’t mind me telling you all this, it’s just that I feel so comfortable with you as if you are my sister or a very close friend.

Indeed, never kinder words have been spoken by a nicer man: “He's a thicko troll who is making your site unreadable." That’s just lovely, lovely. I’m so excited to have found you, a kindred soul. And I can’t even begin to tell you how glad I am that you really, really understand high poetry. You are wonderful, Ros, just wonderful. “I have no desire to trace you, nor any means to do so, it would make it more likely for you to get a reply and cause fewer misunderstandings for myself.”

I don’t care about being traced. Your misunderstanding are your personal responsibility. If you don’t understand, ask. If you are wrong, apologise. If you can reply, do. If you can’t, don’t. Whether I sign off or not, you still jump before you think and this is the root of most of your misunderstandings. Whether you are right or wrong, all you wanna do is curse and insist that you are right. To give you an example:

Me: “That’s precisely my point: you pay no attention to your blog. You are doing ‘other things’. Makeup, cooking, Trump, TV, etc.”

You: “As for your final paragraph, blooming cheek! What's it got to do with you what I do? What saintly deeds do you suggest as an alternate to putting on make up and cooking? And what saintly deeds are you doing?”

Nice, you’ve gone straight for the jugular having given no thought to the fact that you have countless times told everyone about what you are doing: makeup, cooking, Trump TV, etc. – nothing to do with me. Why, then, have you been telling everyone, including me, things which, you now say, are no one’s business but yours? Alternative “saintly deeds”… Perhaps giving respect to those who comment on you blog. Perhaps even publishing ALL their sufficiently courteous comments, regardless of whether you or the pretty boys you call friends find them cryptic. Perhaps you could go even as far as to stop insulting me and my intelligence and understand that some of your readers understand things you don’t. If this is hard to understand, please ask me.to explain in simpler terms.

As to my “saintly deeds”, I’ve been keeping myself busy keeping your blog alive despite your withholding many of my posts. If not for me, you wouldn’t have anyone to talk to today. Is it saintly enough?

And please stop trying my patience, it’s inexhaustible. Please don’t waste my time, it’s limited. Please publish all posts as above. Please give your contributors the courtesy they deserve, and please do not insult them and/or their intelligence.

    Thank you very much.

  29. I was very tempted to take you up on your opening threat but I wanted to see the rest of your post which isn't visible at the moderating stage. I should have gone with my first thoughts.

It is very strange, this is my personal blog, I won't go so far as to say my personal space, because I welcome strangers and publish their views, but overall I have complete autonomy. I am also very happily single, a condition I thank all the Gods for every day - I've never liked the idea of being beholden to anyone and I hate the guilt that accompanies commitment. I raised my kids, I took care of my parents, now I am free.

Why then, when I read your charmless posts, do I feel as though I am in an abusive marriage? Here you are berating me for the way in which I run my blog as if it were a joint venture or a 'mom and pop' store. Time for you to step back my friend and take a look at your own behaviour and your own motives, and I doubt I am the first one to say this to you. I have zero tolerance for control freaks, especially those who try to exert control over me.

Your frustration is a result of your failure to get the response you want to your boring, long winded posts. The one above for example, consists of non stop whining and a narrative of the petty bickering that's going on inside your head. I'll be honest, there is nothing therein of any interest to me. You can nag, nag, nag but you still won't get my attention.

Finally, as to the 'trying of your patience', let me clear this up for you. Your patience is yours alone, that is, it is something you do actually have control over. That you allow it to be tried by the reading of a stranger's blog, is your choice, neither I, nor anyone else, forces you to read my words.

“To whom is she a wonderful example, Ros? An example of what?”

Sorry but I find your remark very nasty to be honest

Princess Sofia is, of course, a role model for many people, who feel sympathy for the most vulnerable in society, but who do not really know how to help. I can assure you that she’s not Ghislaine Maxwell, Kate McCann, Amanda Knox or Jodi Arias.

      Delete
    2. The nastiness you speak of is in the eye of the beholder, Bjorn. The two questions you have attempted to answer are not nasty, but you have perceived them as such, for whatever reason. Credit to you for your attempt nevertheless.

      Björn7 May 2020 at 16:44

Are you saying that it is a princess doing whatever she is filmed, for world-wide distribution, doing who is “a role model”, not the millions of companionate, dedicated doctors, nurses, health workers and volunteers who day, after day, after day do whatever they can to help those in need of their help? I would beg to differ, Bjorn. I think you see things the wrong way around.

“a role model for many people, who feel sympathy for the most vulnerable in society, but who do not really know how to help”

‘Forget the untitled millions I’ve mentioned, look at a princess’ is your answer?

    4. Hi EFG 8 May 2020 at 13:08

Here’s just an attempt to clarify why I responded to your post.
“The nastiness you speak of is in the eye of the beholder, Bjorn”, but very often in the eye of the speaker, I’d say.

On one occasion when I was together with a couple new friends, I mentioned just in passing something about my upbringing and the upper class habits that characterized my parents' social life. I did so just to highlight the general absurdities of life, but not because I wanted to brag about it. Someone ,who listened half-heartedly asked me who those rich friends of my parents were. I was supposed to name them. Of course, I could only see that comment as a questioning of the truthfulness of my story, not as an honest interest in what could have become an interesting topic of discussion. So why should anybody have to explicitly name all the people to whom princess Sofia is a good example of a young person, who has compassion with others.

I’m well aware of that there’re real heroes in those corona times sacrificing their lives to save infected people and that princess Sofia is not one of them. Neither am I. Still, I don't think she's falsely trying to portray herself as Sweden’s Florence Nightingale, but I believe that what she's doing comes straight from the heart, which I’ve no doubt about, and if young people see this they will better understand what this crisis is all about.

      Delete
    5. Forgive me for interjecting here, but the nastiness in EFG's post was apparent, so too his/her attempt at a 'gotcha' question. Sadly, that nastiness is leitmotif for most of the posts I receive. And most of them I bin, I don't want to read them and I doubt anyone else does.

EFG it would appear has entirely missed the point in his anger towards our praise of Sweden's Princess Sofia as a role model. Royalty does not have a governmental role these days, ergo, being role models is pretty much all they have. It probably began with Queen Victoria who wanted her family to be seen as the ideal model family, something every British citizen should aspire to.

And we, a collective we, do look to our Royal families, perhaps more than we look towards celebrities and media stars, for guidance, or at least a nod, as to how we should behave. If a royal princess dons rubber gloves and joins those on the front line fighting this pandemic, it sends a powerful message to millions. I won't say it glamourizes the menial, humble, tasks she has taken on, but for many young people, they may think if a princess can do this, so can I.

For me, it brought to mind our own Merry Monarch, Charles II best known for his dalliance with a certain Nell Gwyn. Less known, is that he was a veritable hero during the Great Fire of London in 1666. Not only did he utilise the full powers of his office, sending troops to control the spread, he worked on the scene day and night not only fighting the fire directly but instituting and managing aid for the hungry and homeless. I try, whenever I read anything about him, to remember that.

I agree Bjorn that what Princess Sofia is doing comes straight from the heart. She could have chosen a 'safe' job but she chose to endure what ordinary Swedish people are enduring in the hospitals, she has quite literally, gone straight to the front line. That's pretty awesome.

I have to say I like our own Royals, the Windsors, far more than I used to. My change of heart happened literally within one moment. Sadly, it was following the bomb at the Arianna Grande concert in Manchester. I watched the Queen (90+) visiting, the mostly young, victims in hospital. I was mesmerized by the power of her presence, the positive, glowing effect, her smile had on the patients and the staff. All my viva la revolucion went out the window, I was deeply touched that a lady of such a great age came to offer comfort to the victims and the NHS staff caring for them.

I'm afraid this has become a blog.....

However, the point of contention is that I quoted Ros and asked two questions. Ros hasn’t answered, you attempted to but failed. Now it falls to you to justify your saying that my having asked the questions is nasty. I don’t think you can, and if I’m right, then you might consider offering me an apology.

By the way, “a teenager”, according to Björn, Sofia, a glamour model and party girl, was about 26 when she co-founded Project Playground, that was after she’d started dating Carl. Goes without saying she had dated and fallen in love with just a man called Carl, not with Prince Carl Philip, and later on she told the story of her earlier years because she wanted everyone to know it, not because she knew she couldn’t hide it, and the world was told theirs was a match made in Heaven and this we are not allowed to doubt. I don’t know of her ever having visited South Africa. The PR narrative continues as it always does.

    2. Hello T, the problem is very real and it is, I feel plaguing this blog and preventing any form of decent discussion. And quite frankly, I feel it has gone on for too long. I published the bad alongside the good, but this opened a door for all kinds of malevolent trolls to make tormenting me their daily hobby.

As for the 'downside'. My blog is merely sauntering at the moment, my heart and soul is not in it and I diagnose this malady as being a result of the negative posts I receive and publish. Ergo, it long past time for me to take back control.

I am not presently on a drive to promote my blog or increase readership and am not bothered by the volume of comments, I prefer quality over quantity. So too my decent readers, more of whom I am sure would reply if they didn't face being attacked by trolls.

I am not sure I agree that I will banning 'genuine anonymous' commenters, a 'genuine' commenter would have no problem identifying themselves in some way and by showing a modicum of respect. I am a great believer in good manners and courtesy as you know T, but those posting anonymously don't bother with any niceties whatsoever. I wouldn't tolerate that in the real world so why should I tolerate it here?

But regardless, I thank you for your kind wishes T. The number of comments may drop dramatically, but I'm fine with that. The ones that will get through, will be those with genuine views and opinions that we can all respond to.

I have never had a problem with people putting forward alternate views to my own - in fact I welcome them, they force me to think outside of my own box. What bothers me is that those who post anonymously are not bringing new ideas or subjects for discussion, their topics are pedantic, full of whiny personal gripes of their own and unwanted advice for me on how to run my blog. They are draining, time wasting and unpleasant and they are longer getting a platform from me.

    1. As is your prerogative T, though I am not sure what you are defending. There is no missing BFG post, and I find it odd that you and another poster think there is.

      Thank you, my dear.

Where did I say I think there is a missing BFG’s post?

I would defend in my own way everything BFG has said so far.

      Bless.

  42. In reply to the comment Dave hoped would go here (it won't), I would suggest Dave that you seek counselling. It really is unhealthy (and creepy) to have such strong angry feelings towards a stranger. I don't take any of your words seriously for the simple reason that you do not know me. The evil devil woman you have conjured up in your head comes from whatever is inside you. It really is weird that you think about me so much because I never, ever, think about you.

As for your threat to publish your comments that I have spammed on social media, go ahead, lol, you have threatened to start a few 'hate Rosalinda' campaigns before but, like most of your life, I would imagine, they all ended in tears. Have you tried the cesspit? Oh yeah you did, how did that go? ha ha

Happily the new blogging format from Google enables me to see much more than I could before, entire posts rather than just the first few lines, so the anonymous posts will no longer slip through.

So long Dave, I do hope this break gives you the opportunity to find a more fulfilling hobby, you will feel much better for it.

  43. Ros, you haven’t published my two comments addressed to T submitted early afternoon yesterday. Could you please tell me why.

    Thank you.

C'est la vie, my friend, peace be upon you. Live and learn, for in the life of the Spirit, one is always at the beginning. :)

      Keep safe.

  44. You are really missing your opportunity Ros. their is a forum that you know - the hellhole - that is denying covid19.

You could analyse what that shitty forum says and prove them wrong.

You would receive a lot of support for doing that.
